UNIT III: Themes In Literature and Life
Goal 1. The student will demonstrate the ability to respond to a text by employing personal experience and critical analysis.
Objectives—The student will:
a. Employ strategic reading to interpret literary and non-literary text by:
• Identifying a general idea or insight about life that an author wishes to convey in a text
• Identifying specific and universal themes within a text
• Tracing recurring themes through multiple texts

• Examining passages to analyze theme
• Relating themes in a text to cultural, historical, or contemporary contexts

• Relating themes in a text to personal experience
• Explaining the interrelationship of literary elements such as plot, characterization, setting, point of view, mood, tone, and theme
• Assessing the appropriateness of diction, tone, and structure in relation to purpose, content, and audience
• Establishing thematic connections
• Evaluating the author’s use of language in relation to the themes and motifs of the text
• Assessing how a cartoonist uses humor to convey his political or social beliefs
• Analyzing and evaluating how the author uses numerous elements of fiction to advance the theme


English 12 AP/GT~Periods 3, 4A, 4B~Literary Analysis of British and World Literature, Advanced Composition, Creative Writing, Preparation for the AP English Literature and Composition Exam, Independent Literary Criticism and MLA Research
  • Review midterm exams and update senior writing folders
  • Collect Pride and Prejudice novels and English literature anthologies
  • Read "Praise Song for the Day" Inaugural Poem by Elizabeth Alexander from http://www.nytimes.com/2009/01/20/us/politics/20text-poem.html and discuss imagery, language, and themes
  • Establish third quarter due dates for AP Literary Analysis Research Paper: thesis statement; outline; MLA format review; after-school conferencing; rough draft for peer editing; final electronic draft sent to turnitin.com; final draft with rubric due in class
  • Reminder--Research Paper academic sources: primary text; author info; time period info; *literary techniques and themes = MAJOR FOCUS of research
