Unit 3: Themes in Literature and Life (Pgs. 28-30)
HCPSS English 12 Essential Curriculum (2009)

• Objective 1.2.2: The student will (TSW) determine the critical or central idea(s) of a text. TSW be able to determine and/or explain the theme(s) found in a work of literature; determine and/or explain the experiences, emotions, issues and ideas in a text that give rise to universal literary themes; determine, explain, and/or extend ideas and issues of a text that may have implications for readers or contemporary society (28).
• TSW apply techniques of creative writing in a poem or journal entry to develop a major theme (29).
• Objective 5.2.1: TSW participate in and contribute to large- and small-group collaboration for a variety of assigned and self-selected purposes (15).

• Independent reading of The Things They Carried (1990) by Tim O'Brien due Mon. 5.16 for in-class discussion and writing (30) as an example of Modern Narrative Technique and Metafiction

English 12 Honors~Period 4B~Literary Analysis of British and American Literature, Application of the Reading Apprenticeship Model, Collegiate Writing with 6+1 Writing Traits, Creative Writing, Senior Writing Project, Vocabulary Study, Preparation for the SAT and the AP Language and Composition Exam, Independent Rhetorical Analysis and MLA Research

• HW--Self-selected poem from poets.org, completed notes, and oral presentations to be finished this week (100)

• Senior Writing Project options/planning and formation of groups: group presentations (200) due May 17 & 19
